What do you get when you combine the worlds fastest bike, the strongest female recumbent cyclist and a very fast test track?
About 82.235 km and a new women’s world record by nearly 9km!
Barbara Buatois of France set off at about 6pm under slightly windy, cool and cloudy conditions in the Varna Tempest. 60min later it was all over just as the heavens opened and wind really picked up. Barbara was not even sure she had completed the hour as the rain and precipitation inside the bike had completely obscured here vision of both the track and of her timing clock.
This distance would have been enough to beat the out right men’s record only a few years ago. In fact, I believe this makes Barbara the 5th fastest hour rider of all time.
Sam Whittingham was scheduled to start after this along with the other male contenders, but the weather turned from bad to worse and the evening racing was called off. Look to some stellar times tomorrow or Sunday.
More results and picture should be available shortly on the official event Website.
