Here’s one sweet, light ride going to Japan. It’s a custom road/light touring frame with S & S couplers featuring Edge Composite fork, Campy Record component group, Industry Nine wheelset, and Erickson seatpost among others. The bike’s total weight (including pedals) is 16 lbs.

I believe the refitted fixie in this page is something like number 30 made back in 2001 or so:

Fresh from the shop is this sleek, simple, lugged urban fixie with custom stem and fork too. Simple pearl white paint with silver highlights. It’s a classic clean speed machine.

Finally Sam has built a single speed 29er for himself. Only two years on the shelf. The heat mark finish is with a torch only and then a clear primer/ clear on top. Naked Eccentric dropouts with eccentric disc mounts. Tora 100mm fork, ghetto tubeless racing ralphs come out at 2.55” with P35 rims. Nice and PHAT! King hubs of course. Petition to allow bikes on Greyhound

Here’s a very important cause sent to us via Jawn Lafratta who is spearheading the petition. Here’s what Jawn has to say:

Greetings fellow cyclists and cycling supporters,
I think it is high time that cyclists on Vancouver Island had an easy option of transporting their bikes up and down the island without having to rely on a car and with undue inconvenience and cost. I have heard that this has been a goal for many people and organizations for a number of years, but so far nothing has come of it. Perhaps with the combined support of many cycling organizations on Vancouver Island and BC we can make this happen.

I have been targetting Greyhound primarily. I think the train is all but a lost cause but I would like to see bikes on the train too eventually, but there is a lot of improvements that need to happen structurally and organizationally at VIA to make this a viable option. The service itself is completely inadequate in terms of the timing and frequency, whereas the bus is much better in that regard. Also currently the train does not take ANY bikes, boxed or otherwise, while the greyhound at least takes them in a box. I contact greyhound multiple times about this and received no response so I have started a petition online to show that this is a service that the people of Vancouver Island need and deserve.

Our boy, Sam Whittingham is in his first ever commercial! Check out the new Hydrive Energy commercial to be featured during this year’s Tour de France on Versus network. Cool. Just click on the picture below and that will hook you up with the commercial.

We were told Versus feed to Canada is the same as the US. So here are the air times for this weekend – Eastern zone so subtract 3 for BC. We have 8 spots this weekend. These are times currently planned but it is possible that they may get bumped for a variety of reasons…no guarantees. Saturday July 3rd: 3:32pm, 4:19pm, 5:08pm, 6:11pm. Sunday July 4th: 2:38pm, 3:23pm, 5:44pm, 6:11pm.

The Greenmachine – A Cargo Bike Story

Recently we were presented with a challenging task. To build a truck bike that could haul gear, groceries, tools and kids AND still be able to ride efficiently, smoothly and relatively quickly. After many hours of discussion and design, this is what we came up with. This bike features custom front rack and built in rear rack, custom double kickstand, Rohloff hub, front generator hub, mounts for the Stokemonkey electric assist and it’s battery and console, as well as many other mounts and braze-ons for various purposes. The Stokemonkey provides up to 500 Watts of power.

This bike has garnered lots of attention on the streets of Vancouver. But most importantly here’s what the rider has to say:

“The ride home went really well. I was at Rathtrevor Park by 1:30, so I just kept going all the way home and made it to the 5:00 ferry. My elder daughter had a school performance friday morning, so I thought it would be good to be back early and see that.

The battery performed really well. I used it fairly liberaly on the uphills and I made it past Parksville, about 130km or so before the power diminished (I did the last 30 km to Departure without the motor). As the charge wanes, there are less watts, therefore less push from the battery. For example, going uphill on a fresh charge, a full throttle gives me 500 to 700 watts.

But towards the end of the battery charge full throttle gives 100 or 150 watts, which doesn’t feel like much.

I was quite amazed at how fast it went down hill, and it did really run nice under my own power. I did 200km in total over 9 hours. I was able to charge the batttery on the ferry for the last 40 km home….”

Hopefully the rides ahead for Jiri are as good or better.

It’s been awhile since we’ve last posted. Things around the shop have been quite hectic with bike builds, bike to work week and the studio tour. I’m finally posting a bike fresh from the shop. This one is full Reynolds 953 stainless featuring Naked stainless Boomerang dropouts and hints of classic colour.
