(updated) New World Hour Record: 90.5km!

Author: Sam

After being resigned to the fact that the weekend would be a complete washout, the weather gods smiled on Sam today.

The sky was thick with clouds and a some gusty wind. Temperature was 20 degrees Celsius. Sam started smoothly with his characteristic slow start but continued to increase the pace lap by lap over the grueling 3600 seconds of heat and exhaustion.  Churning a massive 228″ gear Sam peeled back the distance as sweat poured into his eyes. The heat inside the bike is nearly 35 degrees, and this must be managed very carefully to avoid heat stroke. As the hour went on, the winds began to improve and when it was all over a new world record of more than 90km was etched into the history books.

Under the best hour conditions I have ever seen, Barbara set out with frsh legs and the experience of two days previous to increase her already stunning record to an unofficial new mark of 84 km. Amazing!

Thankyou to all who made this event and record possible, especially Ford, Mike Mowett, Sean Costin and Garrie Hill as well as all the incredible volunteers.

Congratulations Sam and Varna team !

I knew you are able to beat 90 km once you get the opportunity to ride on a smooth non-bumpy surface. And now you did it. Its an incredible result. I know how hard I had to push Eivie I to ride 88 km/h in a sprint on the airport in Slovenia and you rode faster for one hour. Really amazing !

    Best regards, Matjaz
